Two at a Time Toe-up Socks
Learning to knit socks as a pair, at the same time with toe up construction, allows the knitter to finish both socks simultaneously helping to ensure a
matching pair and avoiding what can be a sense of “having to start all over after just
finishing, but not really finishing.” Knitting socks from the toe to the cuff provides an
opportunity to try on the socks as they progress in order to guarantee a good fit. The toe-up
technique offers the added bonus of the ability to use the entire amount of available yarn
knitting socks of a preferred leg length without worrying about running out of
yarn on the second sock, express their personal style while building a varied wardrobe or
individualized gifts for others. Advancing sock knitting skill builds confidence and success
for anyone who has mastered the fundamentals necessary to knit a pair of socks utilizing advanced sock knitting patterning, fingering weight yarn, and appropriately sized small needles.
Principles taught include the differences between cuff-down and toe-up
construction, a review of reading, understanding complex patterns and following their charts, a review of yarn selection and effects of different color patterning, and a review of making modifications for fit.
Skills taught include dividing a single skein of yarn into equal parts, long circular needle knitting in the round, toe-up cast on options, heel options for toe-up socks techniques, pattern-specific techniques, and converting cuff-down patterns to toe-up construction.
Project options, chosen by student, include socks incorporating lace, cable, or colorwork patterning using fingering weight yarn and appropriate sized needles.
Supplies provided by student with assistance of instructor, as desired.
Three sessions, two hours each. Practice time in class and homework between sessions.
Cost $75.
